Taking advantage of two consecutive holidays on Saturday (Ramzan) and Sunday, most denizens will be proceeding to East and West Godavari districts to take part in Pushkaram.
Meanwhile, the Pandit Nehru Bus Station and Vijayawada Railway station teemed with passengers going to participate in the 12-day event. Most families from the city and its suburbs hired private vehicles to reach Pushkaram venues while others travelled in their own cars.
“We don’t want to miss the occasion which comes after 12 years. My family and me planned to spend two days at our relatives’ house in Rajahmundry to take part in the religious ceremony,” Subba Rayudu, who boarded Nagarsol-Narsapur Express, said.
The ever-busy Besant Road, Bandar Road, Benz Circle and Patamata that used to teem with hundreds of vehicles daily, may not witness heavy rush as several commercial establishments and government offices will be closed for the holidays.
For traffic police, it will be some relief from regular chaos at the busy junctions. “We can relax a bit for the next two days as there will be thin presence of people on roads. But we have to regulate vehicles that are proceeding towards Rajahmundry from Hyderabad via Eluru Road from Ramavarappadu,” said Patamata Traffic Inspector G. Srinivas.
