The Indira Gandhi Municipal Staidum, which was decked up for the Chandranna Rythu Kosam programme with colourful banners, flowers and stalls, resembled a dump yard on Thursday as hordes of trash being strewn around the ground greets the visitors.

Though, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials claim majority of the waste was cleared after the conclusion of the programme on Tuesday, the ground reality is different.

Flowers, leftover food, plastic plates and cups were scattered all over the ground and the iron poles used for putting up the stalls are yet to be removed.

With rain lashing the city since the last two days, things have gone from bad to worse at the stadium. Foul smell gripped the stadium environs.

Officials did not permit sportspersons and morning walkers to enter the stadium, citing security reasons for the programme on Tuesday.

Those few, who turned up on Thursday morning, had to return following the unhygienic conditions on the premises. “This is a regular feature here. It takes at least three to four days for the officials to clear the waste and restore things at the stadium whenever a programme is conducted,” said an employee.

The District Sports Authority washed off it hands saying it was the responsibility of VMC to clear the waste.

This is a regular feature here. It takes at least three to four days for us to clear waste and restore things at the stadium.
