Beating the heat, the natural way

April 29, 2011 04:26 pm | Updated 04:26 pm IST - ONGOLE:

As the mercury soars, people line up to taste palmyra fruit in the town and elsewhere in the district to beat the heat. Those who shuttle between the town and nearby villages make it a point to stop near the palmyra tree to taste the jelly-like fruit fresh from the tree.

Thiryty-year-old Srinu while selling the much-sought after three-eyed fruits along with his wife near the Gundlakamma low-level causeway near Madiralapadu, says all sections of people stop to taste the fruit, which provides respite from the sweltering heat.

The couple says “we pay on an average Rs 40 per tree to download bunches of fruits and get an income ranging between Rs 300 and Rs 500 as summer peaks.'' People make a beeline to the Ratnamahal centre in the town to taste the tender fruits sold at Rs 10 per packet containing about five pieces.
