V. Nanammal, probably the oldest woman yoga instructor in India, will participate in the International Yoga Celebrations, being organised by the S.K.S.D. Group of Educational Institutions at Tanuku in West Godavari.

The week-long celebrations will be conducted from June 15 to 21, coinciding with the International Yoga Day, on the sprawling S.K.S.D. College grounds, said the institutions’ founder correspondent and secretary Chitturi Subba Rao.

On June 15, the celebrations will begin with a rally in which yoga experts, trainers and gurus from different institutions and students will participate. Seminars, lectures, competitions on yoga and yoga practising will mark the week-long programme, Mr. Subba Rao said.

“The theme of the programme is to promote yoga and explain its benefits to the people. Experts will give health tips and share their experiences,” said S.K.S.D. Degree College Principal P. Aruna.

The nonagenarian Nanammal, a native of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, who had been practising yoga from 10 years of age, is teaching yoga for many students and is leading a healthy life.

Nanammal is likely to deliver a lecture and teach some ‘asanas’ during the celebrations, said S.K.S.D. Mahila Kalasala UG and PG administrative officer M. Rajendra Prasad and vice-principal Naga Pushpavathi.

Jyothsnavi to take part

Another yoga expert, Jyothsnavi, who can perform 1,600 ‘asanas’ in an hour, will grace the occasion. Jyothsnavi, a native of Nellore, completed SSC recently. She has participated in many international yoga events.

In 2016, the girl won gold medal in the International Yoga Competitions held in Vietnam.

She has been selected for the competitions to be organised in Singapore in June this year, Mr. Subba Rao said.

Besides, professors from the Vivekananda Yoga University, Bengaluru, public representatives, Sadguru from Coimbatore, officials of the Department of Ayush, Andhra Pradesh, and students of Nuzvid IIIT will participate.

Committees have been formed by the institute management for making elaborate arrangements for the programmes, the correspondent added.
