443 personnel died on duty this year: DGP

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will attend the Police Commemoration Parade at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium here on Wednesday and pay homage to police personnel who died while discharging duties, the Director-General of Police (DGP) J.V. Ramudu on Tuesday said.

As many as 443 police personnel from the State and paramilitary Services were killed while discharging duties this year, he added.

Briefing newsmen about the Police Martyr’s Commemoration Day to be observed here on Wednesday, Mr. Ramudu said that as many as 14 police officers had laid down their lives while on duty in the State of Andhra Pradesh. Police personnel will pay floral tributes to personnel who sacrificed their lives and inquire about the well being of their family members on the occasion, the State police chief said.

Competitions for students

As part of the Police Commemoration Week being observed from October 15 to 21, police conducted various competitions for students, organised open house and blood donation campaigns in which thousands of public, students and policemen participated.

“The government is extending welfare fund ranging between Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 30 lakh to police officers who died fighting extremists, terrorists and anti-social elements.

“Moreover, accident coverage is being provided to home guards,” he said.

Welfare initiatives

Welfare programmes are being carried out for police personnel and home guards under the ‘Bhadratha Scheme’, ‘Arogya Bhadratha’, Subsidiary Police Canteens and through Police Hospital and A.P. Police Welfare Society, Mr. Ramudu added.

City Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang was present.
