A mentally challenged woman allegedly set herself ablaze at Chinnapallipalayam near Kattuputhur on Tuesday. The victim Vinodhini (21) resorted to the extreme step when her parents were away for work. Police said parents of the woman, a school drop out, had reportedly considered her to be possessed and made attempts to drive out the “evil spirit.” The woman poured kerosene over her and set herself ablaze in her house. Neighbours who noticed thick smoke emanating from her house attempted to douse the flames but the woman died. The police have registered a case.
