Fifty six prisoners at the Central Prison here underwent a training on two vocational courses offered by the Indian Overseas Bank’s Rural Self Employment Training Institute and National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development on the prison premises.
Divided into two batches, 26 prisoners underwent training on bakery, the remaining were trained in food processing. At a function held at the prison on Saturday to mark the valediction of the training, D. Palani, Superintendent of Prison, and K. Jeyabharathi, Superintendent of Women’s Prison, gave away certificates to the trainees.
A platform to sell
The products prepared by the prisoners were being sold to members of the public through the Prison Bazaar, they said. =S. Sureshkumar, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, spoke on the role of NABARD in supporting endeavours of this order.
S. Prabhakaran, Lead District Manager, and C. Sudhakar, Director of Indian Overseas Bank Rural Self-Employment Training Institute, said this was an innovative venture on the part of the institute in imparting training to prisoners. The training, he said, would ensure an adequate economic uplift for the trainees.
