Two labourers killed in wall collapse

Two construction labourers died after a portion an old compound wall of a building under construction collapsed and fell on them at Chinthamani here on Monday. The victims were identified as T.Mariyayee, aged about 55 years and K.Murugan (45).

The Fort Police have registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and arrested the building owner N.Ismail (49) and mason P.Kathiresan (32). The contractor J. Srivatsan (50) cited as the third accused is absconding.

Police sources said the old compound wall on three sides were razed down during the construction of a new building with one portion of the wall left untouched. The labourers were working close to the portion of the compound wall that was yet to be razed down, when it collapsed and fell on them.

Mariyayee who was caught under the debris died on the spot, while Murugan died in the hospital, police sources said.
