A traditional paddy research centre in the name of late ‘Nel’ Jayaraman was opened at Paruthiyur in Tiruvarur district on Tuesday.

The research centre, set up by Create organisation in about 10 acres at Paruthiyur, would serve as production centre for traditional paddy varieties identified and preserved with vigour by ‘Nel’ Jayaraman.

The centre, opened by Collector T. Anand, would also serve as a training field for agriculture students apart from preserving traditional paddy seeds, according to a press release.
