Traditional honours were sent from Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam to Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati on Monday to mark the annual ‘Aanivara Asthanam’ celebrations.
Holy silk vastrams meant for Lord Venkatachalapathy and Goddess Alarmel Mangai Thaayar, besides fruits, dry fruits and garlands, were taken to the sanctum sanctorum of the Srirangam temple in the morning and pujas were performed.
The holy gifts were thereafter brought to the Renga Vilas Mandapam where it was kept for display.
Later, the temple elephant carried them up to the ‘Renga Renga’ gopuram entrance from where the gifts were taken to Tirupati by road.
Joint Commissioner of Srirangam Temple P. Jayaraman and members of the Board of Trustees were present on the occasion. The honours would be presented to the Tirupati temple on Tuesday.
The tradition marks an annual thanksgiving event as the idol of Sri Namperumal belonging to Srirangam temple was kept in safe custody at Tirumala for 40 years from 1320 AD to 1360 AD during the Muslim invasion.
The honours from Tirupati temple to Srirangam temple are sent on Kaisika Ekadasi day every year.
