Tiruchi railway workshop employees stage protest

Several employees of the Golden Rock Railway Workshop at Tiruchi resorted to ‘work to rule’ protest in support of their demands on Friday.

The protest which commenced on Thursday night at the workshop went on till Friday afternoon leading to suspension of normal work.

The workshop is engaged in a slew of activities including periodic overhaul of broad gauge diesel locomotives and passenger coaches besides manufacturing container wagons.

The protest was organised by the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union led by its Assistant General Secretary, Area - in-charge, Golden Rock, S. Veerasekaran.

Nearly 4,500 employees including 550 women staff participated in the protest.

They wanted the workshop to change the outdated machines.

He said that some of the high-value machines procured as replacement for older machines were not functioning for the last two years.

The demand for replacement of old machines have been taken up at the highest level.

The employees wanted the authorities to fill up a large number of vacancies in the Group C and Group D categories and improve overall infrastructure of the workshop and that of employees.

Therefore, officers held a meeting with the employees who gave up their agitation following assurance that their demands would be looked into.
