Persistent demand of exporters for a canopy in front of the export cargo terminal at the Tiruchi international airport has been addressed.
A huge canopy has been put up in front of the cargo terminal enabling exporters to despatch their goods without any difficulty during rain or intense heat.
It has been established at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh with funds provided by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
The canopy construction work which commenced in March was completed in a span of four-and-half months much ahead of the deadline.
It would provide cover for goods carriers carrying international cargo meant for overseas destinations.
The export trade community had been seeking this facility for several years and persistently raised the issue on various forums.
Airport sources said as part of the project the truck dock area had been widened on both sides to accommodate more goods carriers in front of the cargo terminal. The area with provisions of ramp and steps on either side would be in a position to accommodate seven big goods carriers or 12 mini goods carriers.
An anti-collision mechanism has been put in place to avert any damage to the platform and pillars while docking goods vehicles.
A total number of 15 LED flood lights have been installed at different places in the canopy area for better illumination while handling cargo during odd hours.
A plug-in facility has been provided for refrigerated vehicles carrying marine products when they wait before goods are loaded onto the aircraft.
Cargo from the Tiruchi airport go out to various overseas destinations including Singapore, Dubai, Kuwait and Kuala Lumpur through different foreign carriers. The movement of international cargo has seen an upswing ever since the export cargo terminal was commissioned a few years ago.
