The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, declared open the newly-built municipal office at Thuraiyur through videoconferencing on Monday. This was the felt need of the municipal officials and the members of the public as the old building was housed in a small building.
Though the office is located at a few metres away from the town on Thuraiyur-Perambalur Road, it is more spacious. The work has been executed at an estimate of Rs.3 crore. The work which commenced on April 13 under the ‘Operation and Maintenance Gap Filling Fund’ scheme has been completed well ahead of schedule, according to official sources.
The new building with a plinth area of 7,762 sq. feet on each floor and has ground plus two floors. It has all basic amenities for the public and municipal officials and employees.
The ground floor houses tax-collection unit, birth and death certificate issuing section and the municipal engineer’s office.
The chairman’s chamber and the council hall are located on the first floor, which also has an office room for the Municipal Commissioner.
