TIRUCHI

Tension prevailed in Ponmalaipatti here on Saturday following a clash between supporters of the AIADMK MP P.Kumar and a group of the DMK cadre.

According to sources, Mr.Kumar had sanctioned funds from his MP’s Local Area Development Fund for establishing a bus shelter at Ponmalaipatti as the old one was damaged. The contractor of the work had reportedly begun the work on Saturday. The DMK Ponmalai area secretary Dharmaraj’s brother Periyasamy had objected to the work being taken up on railway land and informed the Railway Protection Force that some unauthorised persons were demolishing a compound wall at the site leading to an earthmover being taken to the police station.

Subsequently, Mr.Kumar had arrived at the spot and questioned Mr.Periyasamy about the incident. A wordy quarrel allegedly led to fisticuffs between the two groups. However, police intervened to restore order.

Police Commissioner A.Amalraj visited the spot and conducted enquiries. Mr.Periyasamy preferred a complaint with the police. Police said no case was registered till late in the evening.
