TIRUCHI: The farmers wing of the Tamil Maanila Congress has urged the state government to take steps to commence renovation of canals under the kudimaramathu scheme for the current financial year immediately.

In a representation to Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami, Puliyur A.Nagarajan, president of the farmers wing of the party, claimed that nearly ₹500 crore has been allotted for the kudimaramathu scheme for the current year.

Works taken up under the scheme should be implemented only through the registered ayacutdars associations of the respective areas and contractors should not be allowed to execute the works under the guise of farmers associations.

The works should be started ahead of the monsoon and the government should allow the works to be executed either manually or using machines. The government should form district level committees, under the chairmanship of the district collectors, to supervise the execution of the kudimaramathu scheme, he said.

Mr.Nagarajan also urged the government to come forward to bear the 10% contribution that the ayacutdars associations are required to make for the works taken up under the scheme.
