The maturity of school students in comprehending the debilitating impact of corruption at multifarious levels on society was amply demonstrated through their vivid picturisation of the sufferings of the masses at an inter-school painting competition held here.

The contest on the theme, ‘My Vision - Corruption-free India’, was conducted by The Hindu Group in association with Neyveli Lignite Corporation, India.

The drawings depicted the ill-effects from the perspective of both the sufferers and perpetrators as also the macro impact.

The topics were ‘My role for a corruption-free India’, ‘Ill-effects of Corruption’, and ‘Break the Corruption Chain’ for senior category students (levels VII to X) and ‘corruption-free India’, ‘Avenues of Corruption’, and ‘Stop Corruption to Spread Smiles’ for junior category (levels III to VI).

Elaborating on the significance of Vigilance Week celebration during the prize distribution ceremony in the city on Wednesday, Rengarajan Srinivasan, ADGM - Vigilance, NLC India Ltd., Neyveli, said there was substantial awareness of corruption and its eradication for more than a decade now. The Right to Information Act passed during 2005 had paved the way for increased awareness and the spirit of questioning. The emphasis of Central Vigilance Commission was more on internalising ethical values than on morality.

Distributing prizes, Pitabas Sarangi, Deputy General Manager, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Tiruchi, said corruption was a cancer to society and that an aware student community would be in a position to root out corruption as future citizens. Pictures of the corruption the students had depicted were bound to be etched in their minds forever, he said.
