Students urged to work for conservation of fossil fuel

Speakers at the valediction of the fortnight-long celebrations on ‘Oil and gas conservation’ organised jointly by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and the Cauvery Group of educational institutions here on Thursday, appealed to the students to understand the importance of saving oil and gas for the sake of posterity.

They called for a sustained programme to be taken up for conservation of natural resources. A large number of students participated in the drawing, slogan-writing, and quiz competitions held as part of the campaign.

Balakrishnan, former Vice- Principal, St. Joseph’s College, was the quizmaster.

R. Lakshmi, District Environmental Engineer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, said there was a serious crisis for energy and strict economic measures were imperative for country’s growth and development. She said the needs of future generation should be taken into serious consideration and as a first step, saving the oil and gas was the need of the hour.

C. Malathi, Deputy Director of Industrial Safety and Health, gave useful tips for conserving oil and gas. A sustained campaign would go a long way in sensitising the masses to its conservation.

R. Rajaram, treasurer of the School Governing Council, and C. Sundara Raman, its president, M. Saraswathi, principal of the school, offered felicitation.

They said that Cauvery Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Cauvery Global School had been partners in organising a series of annual programmes in coordination with the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited.

These programmes aimed at creating awareness among the masses on the importance of conserving oil and gas and exploring newer methods to use fuels. R. Jyothi Prasad, Senior Regional Manager, said there were several means for saving fuel by adopting technically-sound and economically safe measures. Every individual should contribute in saving the fuel. The management of the school and HPCL had motivated the young students to achieve long-term benefits.
