South zone netball championship kicks off in Tiruchi

Three-day tourney draws participation of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry team

The MAP Trust-south zone netball championship for men and women got off to a start at JJ College of Engineering and Technology here on Friday.

The 10 edition of the tournament being organised by Tiruchi District Netball Association (TDNA) was inaugurated by K. Ponnusamy, chairman, JJ Group of Institutions.

The three-day tourney draws participation of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry team.

B. Mohan, treasurer, Netball Federation of India, who presided over the inaugural function, said that the federation has been working hard towards popularising the sport among the youth.

League basis

According to S. Murugan, secretary, TDNA, the south zone championship is being conducted on league basis and the top three teams in the men’s and women’s section would be decided based on their standings at the end of the league phase.

Arokiyasamy Xavier, sports coordinator, St. Joseph’s College, P. Ukramakali, vice president, Tamil Nadu Football Association, and B.S. Sha-in-sha, director of physical education, Jamal Mohammed College, took part in the inaugural function.
