Terming the setback in the IT sector in India as a temporary phenomenon due to economic slowdown at global level, Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys, on Monday sought to assure that the economic cycle would turn for the better.

"The IT industry itself is financially strong and capable. There is no planned layoffs in the IT sector. But performance-related separations are inevitable in the competitive scenario. But even those sent out find jobs within the sector owing to their experience,” Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan told mediapersons after inaugurating Third-i, the new computer centre at National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi.

NASSCOM had estimated creation of two lakh jobs this year. Out of the 185 billion dollars revenue earned by the IT sector, 130 to 140 billion dollars were generated from exports, providing good exchange and employment. India holds the leadership in IT services and application fields, he said.

Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, who is also the current chairman of Axilor Ventures, said there was vast scope for strengthening the start-up eco system in Tiruchi by leveraging the presence of NIT-T and BHEL.

High tech labs

Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NITT, said Third i would house four big labs, each with 132 high-end all-in-one computers, a conference hall, two seminar halls, a meeting room, a server room, and other features.

The laboratories would be open 24 x 7 to B. Tech., M. Tech. students, M.S., and Ph.D research scholars for their regular lab classes to supplement classroom lectures, and to carry out their projects and develop their professional skills, she added.
