Rural development officials protest

Several Rural Development Department officials were arrested in Tiruchi on Thursday after they resorted to picketing agitation.

The agitation was called by the Tamil Nadu Rural Development Officials AssociationHeeding the call, over 200 rural development officials resorted to the stir in front of the Collectorate when they were arrested by the police.

The stir was led by association district president Maruthupandian.

Their demands included filling of vacancies at all levels through promotion and new appointments, enhanced pay for Panchayat Secretaries on a par with Junior Assistants and increase the grade pay for Office Assistants to Rs. 400.

In Perambalur, over 80 members of the association were arrested while 90 association members were held in Ariyalur.
