With the Cauvery in full flow, a large number of people were seen enjoying the view at the Mayanur Barrage in Karur district on Sunday.

With the Cauvery and the Coleroon rivers remaining in spate due to heavy discharge of excess water from the Mettur dam, the riverfronts have become picnic spots for people of Tiruchi, Karur and Thanjavur.

According to Public Works Department sources, though the inflow in the Cauvery has come down marginally, it continued to carry about 2 lakh cusecs on Sunday.

The inflow, which stood at 2.28 lakh cusecs on Saturday morning at Mayanur Barrage, came down to about 2 lakh on Sunday morning. It went down further to 1.85 lakh cusecs around noon on Sunday.

The discharge into the Coleroon, which stood at about 1.6 lakh on Saturday, was reduced marginally. About 60,000 cusecs was released into the Cauvery.

PWD officials said that the inflow would be between 1.80 lakh to 2 lakh cusecs for the next two days. It might come down after that. However, the alert would continue to stay till further notice.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people visited riverfronts along the Cauvery and the Coleroon on Sunday. More than 10,000 people thronged Mukkombu (Upper Anicut) in Tiruchi district to witness the beauty of the Cauvery river carrying to its capacity. Similarly, the Mayanur Barrage in Karur district drew about 15,000 people.
