Several lorry loads of essential materials were sent to flood-hit areas in Kerala from central districts on Tuesday.
One relief truck was sent to Coimbatore Collector’s office for onward dispatch to Kerala, while others were sent to specific relief camps in the flood-ravaged State by the district administrations of Karur and Nagapattinam.
In Nagapattinam, District Collector S. Suresh deputed two deputy tahsildars to hand over the collected materials such as rice, sugar, dhal, salt, groceries, water bottles, blankets, biscuits, dhotis, sarees, churidhars, inner garments, notebooks, pencils, pens, torch lights, candles, masks, and stethoscope worth over ₹7 lakh to Wayanad district administration. The materials are expected to reach their destination on Wednesday.
Additionally, the Akkaraipettai fishing hamlet in the district presented a cheque for ₹2 lakh.
Karur
In Karur district, Transport Minister M.R. Vijayabaskar and Collector T. Anbalagan dispatched a lorry load of bedsheets, blankets, rice, sarees, sanitary napkins and mat to the Coimbatore Collectorate from where the materials will be transported to Kerala. The district administration had moblised and sent to Kerala ₹17 lakh worth of materials a few days ago.
In Pudukkottai, District Collector S. Ganesh dispatched lorry loads of rice, sugar, tea, water bottles, cooking oil, new dresses, blankets, and other materials worth ₹75 lakh. The materials were mobilised through government departments and from private organisations.
Ariyalur Collector M. Vijayalakshmi despatched two lorry loads of relief materials, including candles, clothes, blankets, biscuits, water bottles, medicines and other essentials, worth ₹13 lakh to Kerala.
In Tiruchi district, personnel of the Railway Protection Force of Tiruchi Division mobilised ₹1 lakh for purchase of relief materials. The materials, including new dhothis, sarees and bedsheets, were sent by train to Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday morning.
The Tiruchi district administration sent a lorry load of materials worth ₹7 lakh mobilised by the Food Safety department to Kattappana relief camp in Idukki district.
The district administration had already sent materials worth ₹30 lakh contributed by NGOs and government organisations, Collector K. Rajamani said.
In Karaikal district, students of Annai Abhirami National School, Kottucherry, delivered the materials they had mobilised from the public to District Collector R. Kesavan and Chief Educational Officer Alli on Monday. The students collected rice, pulses, condiments, dhal, clothes and garments for children.
