Project to reduce greenhouse gas emission launched

The Tiruchi City Corporation has launched a project aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emission in association with GIZ India, a German Development Agency, and Saahas, a Bengaluru-based firm.

The project titled ‘Circular Waste Solutions’ in Tiruchi is focused on promoting carbon circular economy solutions in solid waste management with the support of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) facility. The main objective of the project is to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from waste by creating awareness of source segregation of waste and ensuring resource recovery from waste through decentralised processing of waste.

Mayor M. Anbazhagan, who launched the project at a function held here recently, said the Corporation had been taking a number of steps to decentralise domestic waste management. The new project would enable the civic body to fine-tune the exercise of segregating waste at source.

Corporation Commissioner P.M.N. Mujibur Rahuman said that there was a need to sensitise the public to the scope for better outcome through segregation of waste at source. Though the awareness of source segregation had gone up, a section of people continued to hand over domestic waste without segregating it as degradable and non-degradable items . The project would build capacities of officials and sanitation staff, and set up or augment the processing infrastructure for wet and dry waste. The project will help in substantial reduction of CO 2 emissions.

Vaibhav, a representative of GIZ, said that the idea was to segregate domestic waste and bulk waste into dry, wet and hazardous ones. If it was achieved, the entire waste could be processed and recycled at the decentralised points easily instead of dumping them at yards.
