Production of traditional brass lamps suspended

Production of traditional brass lamp at Nachiyarkovil near Kumbakonam has been suspended after a meeting between manufacturers and traders over revision of rates failed to arrive at a solution.

The talks are held once in two years, and during the last revision the traders agreed to an increase of 18% over the then base price for various sizes and weights of traditional lamps.

As talks over revision of rates began this year, the manufacturers demanded 80% increase for products having lesser weight and 50% for products having higher weight. But the traders offered an increase of ₹10 per kg, which resulted in the manufacturers deciding to pull down shutters of their units until their demand was met.
