Special abishekam and poojas were performed for the mammoth nandi idol at Brahadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur on the occasion of Maattu Pongal on Wednesday.
A large number of devotees thronged the temple to offer worship.
The nandi, situated in front of the sanctum sanctorum, was decorated with sweets, fruits and vegetables, weighing nearly a tonne.
Priests offered special prayers as a mark of thanksgiving to the nandi and deeparadhana was performed in the presence of thousands of devotees and a few foreign tourists visiting the temple.
Poojas were also offered to a herd of 108 cows as part of the festival.
