A large number of devotees thronged the Big Temple on the occasion of Maattu Pongal in Thanjavur on Wednesday.

Special abishekam and poojas were performed for the mammoth nandi idol at Brahadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur on the occasion of Maattu Pongal on Wednesday.

A large number of devotees thronged the temple to offer worship.

The nandi, situated in front of the sanctum sanctorum, was decorated with sweets, fruits and vegetables, weighing nearly a tonne.

Priests offered special prayers as a mark of thanksgiving to the nandi and deeparadhana was performed in the presence of thousands of devotees and a few foreign tourists visiting the temple.

Poojas were also offered to a herd of 108 cows as part of the festival.
