Poor performance of government schools in board exams was attributed primarily to understaffing and vacant positions of headmasters. This among other factors perceived to be the cause for under-performance of government schools here in the district was sought to be addressed at the consultative meeting of headmasters at the collectorate on Saturday. At the meeting, Fisheries Minister K.A.Jayapal acknowledged the poor performance, with many schools recording an abysmal pass percentage of below 50 in the class X and XII board exams last year.
Vouching that the issue of vacancies in government schools, especially those of headmasters, shall be taken to the notice of the State government, the Minister urged parent-teacher associations to enable ad-hoc appointments in schools, until such vacancies are filled. Lauding the performance of Ayakaranpulam government higher secondary school, that had recorded cent percent results in the board exams, Mr.Jayapal urged other schools to emulate its pedagogical methods including holding special classes.
