With criminals getting smarter and adopting newer methods in committing crimes , law enforcers have sought to fortify monitoring mechanisms with technology support.

As a follow-up to the sensitisation meetings with trading community, bankers, and others on the vitality of security-related measures, the city police authorities have now fixed a deadline for installing Closed Circuit Television (CCTV). In a precise instruction issued a few days back, City Police Commissioner Shailesh Kumar Yadav has asked all commercial establishments, banks, ATM centres, jewellery and pawn broker shops, marriage halls, hospitals, lodges, mansions, theatres, cyber cafes, multi-storeyed residential buildings, and places of worship to install CCTV before March 31.

The Commissioner cautioned that if the CCTV were not installed and in the event of any untoward incident taking place at the above-mentioned places after April 1, the owner / manager / officers of such establishments would also be held responsible and action would be initiated as per law.

The latest directive by the city police for putting in place the deterrent measure comes in the wake of daring bank robberies at Chennai in quick succession recently. The purpose is to ensure the safety and security of people and create moral fear among offenders, says Mr.Shailesh Kumar Yadav. The underlying message is that everybody should participate in crime prevention and facilitate a system that will assist the law enforcers in identifying the culprits and cracking the cases , he adds.

As criminals operate at inter-district and inter-state levels today, law enforcers face enormous challenge in establishing the identity of the offenders.

Footages from the CCTV would provide effective leads to the investigators to identify the culprits and zero-in on the offenders, say police sources citing the Chennai incident.

The recent meeting was preceded by similar interactions with owners of jewellery showrooms and pawn broker shops.

The jurisdictional police officer would inspect their respective area to ascertain if the CCTVs had been installed, say the sources.
