Thirty-eight persons, including 18 spectators, were injured during a jallikattu held at Peria Suriyur on the outskirts of Tiruchi city on Wednesday.
Of them, 10 suffered grievous injuries. Six spectators and three bull owners were among those injured. After being given first aid at a medical camp set up at Peria Suriyur, they were referred to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College hospital in the city.
Out of 509 registered bulls, a total of 506 were released from the vaadivaasal , where the participating animals were let out one after the other after being subjected to medical examination by veterinary teams.
The remaining three bulls were rejected on medical grounds.
Bulls were brought from Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts to participate in the event.
As many as 260 bull tamers were allowed to take the arena after being subject to medical examination.
Officials closely monitored the event, which began at 7 a.m. and ended at 2 p.m. Tamers were given distinctive T-shirts.
The organised made elaborate arrangements to facilitate visitors to witness the event from a metal gallery.
According to a rough estimate, 6,000 persons, including 400 women, witnessed the event.
Senior revenue, police and animal husbandry officials also monitored the event. Attractive prizes, ranging from two-wheeler, gold coins, television sets, refrigerators and washing machines were offered to the victorious bull tamers.
