A special drive to plant one lakh neem saplings in 14 districts across the State launched by Hindustan Unilver Limited - Hamam in association with The Hindu group concluded on Sunday.

The initiative called 'Hamam Green Puthaandu' was inaugurated on Tamil New Year's Day this year and aimed at growing the native tree species which is cyclone-resistant and also for improving the green cover.

Harmon Dhillon, General Manager, Skin Cleansing, Hindustan Uniliver Limited - Hamam, at the valedictory session, said that neem was useful in many ways, and Hamam harnessed neem as it was nature’s most potent protection from skin problems. A close monitoring of the saplings would be kept for a period of six months for ensuring their survival.

A maximum of 15,000 saplings have been planted in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Salem and Madurai district each, followed by 12,000 in Thanjavur, 10,000 in Chennai, 6,000 in Kanyakumari, 5,000 in Tiruchi, 2,000 in Karur, 1,000 each in Villupuram, Tirunelveli, Cuddalore, Pudukottai and Tiruvarur.
