One dead, 31 injured in goods-carrier capsize

A woman died on the spot and 31 others sustained injuries on Sunday when the goods carrier on which they were travelling from Thachankurichi near Siruganur to attend a funeral tumbled down the road and capsized after one of the tyres reportedly burst.

They were rushed to the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital. Some were admitted to a private hospital at Chathiram Bus Stand. State Animal Husbandry Minister N.R.Sivapathy called on the injured at the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital. The District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan warned drivers and owners of goods carriers that their vehicles will be confiscated if found transporting passengers. In a release, the Collector said that it was illegal to transport passengers in goods vehicles, and that the administration will cancel permits of erring drivers and owners. Ms.Jayashree appealed to the public to desist from travelling on goods vehicles and safeguard their lives.
