Students of the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, embarked on HumaNITTY 2015, the institute’s version of Daan Utsav, a festival of philanthropy, on Thursday.
HumaNITTy’15 was inaugurated by S. Sundarrajan, Director, NIT-T, and K.A. Bhaskaran, TEQIP Mentor and World Bank Consultant by “signing in” and making the first contribution. Students participated in large numbers by “signing in” and contributing for the cause out of their pocket money.
Dr. Sundarrajan said what started as a spark three years ago was fast growing into a mega event that is typical of NITT.
During the week long celebrations, NIT-T students would be setting up libraries in neighbouring village schools, visiting inmates of old age homes apart from planting Kalpakavriksha, ‘The Wish Tree.’ ‘Wish Tree’ is a concept with wishes of children as leaves. Passersby are welcome to fulfil any wish in the tree; when he decides to fulfil a wish, he plucks the leaf and informs that he wishes to fulfil that particular wish.
Collection of old clothes for distribution to orphanages and old age homes has been dispensed with and replaced with donation of new clothes to the inmates of ashrams.
All the literacy related charity events are carried out in association with Livia Polymers, an NIT alumni owned venture. Educational accessories and basic infrastructure needs of 10 different schools and homes would be fulfilled, according to a NIT-T press release.
On October 4, a gala event for children would be held when children from homes in and around the city would be guests of NITT and participate in various games, competitions and fun events.
