NIT student drowns

An engineering student of the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, drowned in the Cauvery at Srirangam on Saturday. Fire fighters who carried out a search on Saturday and Sunday could not trace the body.

Fire fighters gave the name of the student as Sakthi Saravanan (22) who was a fourth-year engineering student of NIT. The student came along with five of his friends at Geethapuram area in Srirangam to take bath.

Sakthi Saravanan entered the water to take bath and drowned on Saturday evening at a time when there was heavy flow of water released from the Mettur dam. Fire fighters said acting on an alert, a 25-member team embarked on a mission to trace the drowned student from Saturday evening.

The operation continued on Sunday, with some local public and volunteers also joining the fire fighters in the rescue mission. However, the body could not be traced till Sunday evening when the operation was suspended due to absence of adequate lighting.
