New ideas for preservation and value addition of edibles and proven technologies in food processing were showcased at the ‘Open Day’ held at the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology, Thanjavur.

While students of Thamarai International School, Thanjavur, came up with a concept of producing an alternative to the banned use-and-throw plastic bags, students of MSPM College of Food Technology, Ugdir, Maharashtra showcased their invention to preserve the nutritional value of chicken.

In all, about 170 entries from the schools and colleges were received for participation in the All India Science Exhibition on Food Processing, that formed part of the two-day ‘Open Day’ event held at the IIFPT on Sunday and Monday.

Out of this 35 were selected and allowed to display and demonstrate their inventions.

Meanwhile, entrepreneurs who have forayed into the food by-products manufacturing industry with technological assistance from the IIFPT and established themselves in the market displayed their products at the event.

The ‘Open Day’ event was open to the general public on Sunday and for students on Monday.
