The role of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the establishment of the University Grants Commission and Indian Institutes of Technology in India was highlighted during the National Education Day Celebrations - 2018 at Bharathidasan University on Monday.

Students of various colleges across the State who had won competitions conducted in connection with the National Education Day were honoured during the function organised by the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC).

Presiding over the function, G. Gopinath, Registrar of the University, elaborated on the contribution of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, as the first Education Minister of independent India, and the progress of Indian education system over the last six decades after Independence.

Prof. Gopinath also explained the University’s initiatives for promoting ‘any time anywhere learning’ through e-learning initiatives, citing the recent launch of a mobile application as a gateway to a vast array of educational services and e-resources.

R. Ilango, Member Syndicate, Bharathidasan University, and former Vice Principal of Vivekananda College, Sholavandan, distributed prizes to the winners of essay writing (Tamil and English) and painting competitions, organised as part of the National Education Day celebrations.

In his special address, Prof. Ilango talked about the rich heritage of the Indian education system and the need for preserving its traditional and cultural roots.

He emphasised that value-based education will alone be meaningful for full-fledged outlook of the learners.

Director in-charge of the UGC-HRDC, S. Senthilnathan said the competitions were patronised well by the students.

The programme culminated with a cultural performance by students of Kalai Kaviri Collge of Fine Arts, Tiruchi.
