In an effort to build modern bus shelters with high quality amenities, the Tiruchi City Corporation has decided to modernise 52 bus shelters in the city.

The list includes bus shelters at Srirangam, Chathiram Bus Stand, College Road, Tiruverumbur and Woraiyur. The project will be implemented under the Smart City proposals. A proposal to this effect has been submitted to a high-power committee, which is empowered to clear it under the Smart City initiatives.

The modern bus shelters will have features such as air-conditioning, fan, water dispensing units, ATM, LED display, coffee vending machines, waste bins, separate toilets for men and women, mobile charging points, digital timetable.

Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran told The Hindu that all major bus shelters in the city would get a facelift.

It had been planned to implement the project under the Public-Private-Partnership mode. “The companies, which come forward to construct the modern bus shelters, will be given advertisement rights,” he said.

Repairs and maintenance work had also been taken up at the bus shelter at Tiruverumbur.

Besides replacing the worn-out benches, a few more passengers facilities would also be made. Corporation officials had been asked to list out the bus shelters, which required immediate attention, he added.
