Man sentenced to 11 years imprisonment

A man was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for rape by the Chief Judicial Magistrate here. The accused Sivanandan (31) of Melaohai village in Kodaivaasal taluk of Tiruvarur was accused of rape on false promise of marriage by a 22-year-old woman.

The affected-woman of Thirumarugal here is said to have entered into a relationship with the accused after she met up with him frequently on his visits to her relative's place in Kodaivaasal. The accused, however, refused to acknowledge her after she sought a formal marriage upon learning of her pregnancy.

A case was registered here at the All Women's Police Station in Nagapattinam in 2009. On Wednesday, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Nallathambi awarded the accused 11 years of imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs.10,000.
