Man dies after consuming chemical substance

He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in a robbery case

A lorry driver who was convicted and sentenced to undergo seven years imprisonment by the Chief Judicial Magistrate in a robbery case caused a flutter by consuming some chemical substance inside the court hall here on Friday moments after the verdict was delivered.

D. Gopi alias Marimuthu, the lorry driver, was immediately shifted to the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Headquarters Hospital in the city and was admitted to the Intensive Medical Care Unit (IMCU). He later died on Friday night.

The Fort Crime police had arrested Gopi and booked a case against him under IPC Sections 392 read with 397 charging him with robbing Rs.1 lakh cash at knife-point from K. Rajadurai, the complainant, near the Chathram bus stand here in May 2009.

Bail

Gopi was subsequently released on bail and the trial took place in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.

Just as Chief Judicial Magistrate Rajasekaran pronounced the verdict, Gopi gulped the liquid in his possession inside the Court hall taking everyone by surprise.

A Constable attached to the Fort Crime police station snatched the plastic container containing the liquid substance from Gopi and got him shifted to the Government Hospital.
