Tiruchi is set to become one of the main sports hubs in the State with major infrastructure developments being carried out by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).

Following the creation of a synthetic hockey turf of international standard, more sports facilities are coming up at the Anna Stadium complex, said M. Vijayakumar, SDAT member secretary, after an inspection here on Monday.

Remaining works pertaining to construction of a multi-purpose indoor stadium would be completed by next month-end, he said. The indoor stadium can host a range of events, including basketball, volleyball, and badminton with a capacity to accommodate nearly 2,000 spectators. He assured that efforts would be taken to lay wooden flooring for the indoor stadium.

The Anna Stadium would be getting a synthetic athletics track with floodlights. “SDAT is in the process of finalising the tender.” A squash court is also coming up at the stadium and synthetic surface for the tennis courts is on the anvil, he added.

Promising initiatives for appointment of NIS-qualified coaches across the State, Mr. Vijayakumar said: “Coaches play a crucial role in producing future champions. It is important to provide quality training to the youngsters.”

Mr. Vijayakumar visited the swimming pool and sports hostel in the stadium complex. N. Sundaram, Deputy General Manager, SDAT; S. Panneerselvam, Regional Senior Manager, Tiruchi-unit of SDAT, were present.
