Domestic air connectivity from Tiruchi is to be strengthened further with private airline IndiGo announcing launch of daily service on the Chennai-Tiruchi-Chennai sector from June 1.

Tiruchi will become IndiGo airline’s 51st destination with four direct flight services to be operated in the sector.

The fast growing budget carrier will operate ATR type aircraft in the sector and has announced the timings of its operations. IndiGo will be the first airline to launch four departures from Tiruchi to Chennai providing same day return facility to the passengers.

The flight from Chennai will leave at 8.45 a.m, 11.50 a.m, 2.45 p.m and 5.40 p.m. with the flying time being one hour and 10 minutes. The flights will depart from Tiruchi at 10.15 a.m., 1.20 p.m., 4.15 p.m. and 7.10 p.m., a release from the airline said.

The airline has already opened the bookings with immediate effect with starting fares being ₹2,499 (all inclusive). The new flights are designed to cater to business and leisure travellers constantly on the lookout for new and affordable flying options.

“The introduction of these flights will further strengthen the airline's ATR operations and provide enhanced connectivity between Chennai and Tiruchi. IndiGo will also be the only airline to provide same day return facility to its customers on the Chennai-Tiruchi-Chennai sector,” the release further said.

“Tiruchi is also a key market for IndiGo in Tamil Nadu,” said Sanjay Kumar, chief commercial officer, IndiGo. “With rising business and tourism stemming from the southern hubs, IndiGo is determined to provide the best travel experience to all those who wish to fly these destination.”

The airline has added Tiruchi to its long list of destinations to reinforce its commitment to connect tier-II and tier-III cities.

At present, Jet Airways operates services on the sector three times a day. A few days ago, it launched service in the Delhi - Mumbai - Tiruchi - Mumbai - Delhi sector enabling the city to have direct connectivity to the country's financial and political capital. Alliance Air, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India, is also operating a service on the Tiruchi-Chennai sector.

The new service from IndiGo is expected to give a huge boost to overall passenger traffic at Tiruchi, which has more overseas flight services than domestic flights presently.

Travel industry circles here feel that travellers from Tiruchi will now have an option to choose a timing of their choice to fly to Chennai with the introduction of IndiGo airline’s four flights a day.

“Introduction of this service would become a boom for the hospitality, travel and tourism sector,” said S.A. Mubashir, joint secretary, Tiruchi Travel Federation.
