‘Government tries to usher in second green revolution'

September 03, 2011 03:30 pm | Updated 03:30 pm IST - THOGAMALAI

In its attempt to improve the livelihood resources of the rural poor, the State government is trying to usher in the second green revolution, said the project officer, District Rural Development Agency, T.Murugan.

Chairing the credit distribution function organised by the Indian Overseas Bank at Thogamalai in Karur district recently, Mr.Murugan said that schemes were being dovetailed to meet the requirements of every section of society.

Focus on women

Women especially are the focus and were being extended numerous aid credits, he added.

In the Thogamalai event, the IOB extended credit worth Rs.1.88 crore under various heads to a total of 186 persons belonging to SHGs served by the bank's branches at Kulithalai, Taragampatti, Nachalur, Neithalur and Thogamalai.

Livelihood of farmers

The government was concerned over the livelihood of the farming community, and wanted to provide them with a decent standard of living. With that end in mind the Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa was speaking of ushering in the second green revolution to bolster their income generation activities, Mr.Murugan said.

He urged the banks, farmers, financial institutions, and government agencies to work in tandem to deliver the results and ensure that the slated ideals fructified.

On the decline in repayments by women SHGs, Mr.Murugan lamented that the avoidable tactic of using SHGs as political wings and playing vote bank politics has done considerable harm to the groups.

Due to the past happenings in the State, the SHGs were expecting the State government to waive the loans availed by them from banks. While claiming that such ideas had slackened the SHG movement, Mr.Murugan urged the SHGs to hold aloft their self esteem and pride while trying to repay the loans borrowed from banks.

Chief Regional Manager, IOB, Dindigul Region, C.Anbu, said that the bank observed August as farmers' month and organised meetings and workshops .

NABARD Assistant General Manager A.Parthiban, Lead District Manager K.Chandrasekaran, Rural Self Employment Training Institute Director Jayaraman, bank and government officials, farmers and representatives from the voluntary organisations took part.
