Electronic voting machines numbering 1,471 were moved to 1,168 polling booths set up in four Assembly segments in Tiruvarur district on Wednesday.

District Election Officer and Collector T. Anand supervised the transporting of 606 EVMs to 303 polling stations in Tiruvarur Assembly segment where the electorate would cast two votes – Nagapattinam Parliamentary (Reserve) constituency and Tiruvarur Assembly by-election — on Thursday.

Besides, 274 EVMs were sent to polling booths in Thiruthuraipoondi Assembly segment, 309 in Nannilam (Nagapattinam Lok Sabha seat), 282 in Mannargudi (Thanjavur LS seat). The vehicles had GPRS equipment fitted in them.

With 82 out of 1,168 polling booths identified as sensitive booths, elaborate security arrangements have been made for smooth conduct of elections in the district.

Special Police Force personnel from Odisha and West Bengal have been deployed along with police personnel, ex-servicemen, retired police personnel, fire service, forest, home guards and NSS cadets from the State.
