Awareness rallies, planting of tree saplings and administration of pledge to protect the environment marked the observance of World Environment Day here on Friday.

NCC cadets took out an awareness rally from Williams Road to Uzhavar Sandhai emphasising the need to protect the environment. The rally was flagged off by the president of Society for Conservation of Nature, Tiruchi V. Sundararaju.

Saplings were planted inside the combined court complex premises. Principal District Judge C. Raghavan inaugurated the exercise by planting a sapling in the presence of judicial officers, advocates and forest department officials.

At BHEL, A.V.Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, administered a pledge to officers and employees affirming its commitment to protect the environment. He said that one of the ways to increase profitability is to avoid waste and underlined the need to recycle whatever possible to reduce cost and increase productivity.

As many as 2015 tree saplings were planted at Dalmia Cement factory at Dalmiapuram.

R.A.Krishnakumar, Executive Director, hoisted a flag and employees took a pledge to protect the environment. Nawab Joan, District Environment Engineer, Ariyalur, emphasised the need to protect the environment from pollution and importance of sapling planting. An awareness rally was taken out by school students in the town.
