Even as schools reopened on Wednesday after summer vacation, the School Education Department has directed government school heads to improve enrolment and surpass the numbers recorded in the previous academic year.

Collector K. Rajamani, who assumed office a few days ago, inaugurated the distribution of free textbooks, notebooks and uniforms to government school students at the Government Higher Secondary School in Siruganur.

He said that the government had taken a number of new policy decisions to improve the standard of school education. It was not only to increase the pass percentage but also to prepare students to excel in the competitive environment. It was important for the heads of schools to exceed the student enrolment than last year. Teachers had a greater role in preparing students to face the challenging environment. They should work hard to live up to the expectation of the government. Intensive campaign should be carried out in their targeted areas to highlight the importance of enrolling students in government schools. He said that distribution had been completed in most of the schools on the first day of reopening of schools. Officials were asked to complete the task without delay. Textbooks and notebooks were given to over 1.68 lakh students of 361 schools on Wednesday. Similarly, uniforms were given to 50,000 students.

M. Ramakrishnan, Chief Educational Officer, said headmasters of all government schools had been asked to ensure good enrolment of students. The heads of higher secondary schools should establish rapport with high and middle schools in their locality to attract new students. The heads of primary and middle schools should meet parents in order to canvass students. The student enrolment should not come down.
