Engineers check EVMs to be used in elections

The process of checking the electronic voting machines (EVMs) that are to be used for the by-election to the Tiruchi West Assembly constituency and the urban local bodies in Tiruchi district commenced here on Tuesday.

Strong rooms

The strong rooms where the EVMs were stored, separately for the local body elections and the Assembly by-election, were opened in the presence of Collector Jayashree Muralidharan and representatives of political parties.

The preliminary checking of the EVMs would be carried out teams of engineers, comprising Chandrasekara Rao, H.Chennaiah and Beema Rao, from Bharat Electronics Limited.

According to district officials, about 300 EVMs would be selected at random from a group of about 555 EVMs for the by-election.

For the local body elections, about 2714 EVMs would be used in the urban local bodies such as the Tiruchi Corporation, municipalities and town panchayats in the district.

EVMs sought

Of this, 1510 EVMs have already been allotted and kept in safe custody here, 1204 more EVMs have been sought from the State Election Commission.
