Identifying the first symptoms of hearing loss and voice changes are crucial to prevent long-term hearing and speech problems was the message of an awareness rally organised by Indian Speech and Hearing Association-Tamil Nadu branch here on Sunday.

Around 150 students pursuing a degree in audiology and speech language pathology from four colleges in Tamil Nadu took out a rally from Holy Cross College. Students distributed pamphlets listing the signs of a voice problem and tips to protect voice to passers-by at Main Guard Gate and Chathram Bus Stand.

“The idea was to create awareness on causes of hearing and speech loss and let people know whom to approach for diagnosis of the problem,” said Ram Shankar, head, Department of Audiology.

Ponnumalai, Assistant Commissioner, Crime and Traffic, along with the Sr. Jeusin Francis, principal, Holy Cross College, flagged off the rally. S. Manohar, president of the State branch of the Indian Speech and Hearing Association, spoke.
