Even as complaints of unhygienic water supply have resurfaced in a few parts of Tiruchi, several areas have gone without water supply for the past two days.

Though there was not much of a problem till the second week of June, areas under the Tiruchi City Corporation that supplies drinking water from the Kambarasampettai collector’s well, Main Pumping Station and the collector’s wells on the River Coleroon, are witnessing erratic and insufficient water supply during the last few days.

According to sources, more than one third of water connections were not supplied with drinking water on Sunday and the situation was almost same on Saturday too.

As per the existing arrangement, the Corporation supplies water for one hour each in the morning and the evening. However, it could not maintain the supply for the last two days. While some areas went without supply, the Corporation maintained supply for just 10 to 20 minutes on Saturday and Sunday in several areas. By the time the residents got ready to fill up the water the supply had stopped, much to their dismay.

Short supply of water was noticed in Cantonment, Periamilaguparai, Selva Nagar, Raja Colony, SBI Officers’ Colony, Bheema Nagar and other areas. Erratic supply was noticed in several areas of Srirangam too. Similarly, there have been complaints of supply of muddy water.

“We have been encountering erratic supply of water for the last ten days. We are not sure when the Corporation supplies water and frequently we get muddy water,” says C. Balasubramanian of Selva Nagar.

A senior official of the Corporation admitted that there has been a sharp fall in the pumping stations due to dip in water level at sources. Water table has gone down by a further 5 feet, the source said.

As far as short supply of water on Sunday, he said about 55 water tanks in different parts of the city could not be filled up due to power cut for more than two hours on Saturday.

To tide over the crisis, it had been decided to sink three more additional bore wells. The selection of sites for sinking bore wells have been finalized and it would be carried out immediately, he said.
