Dasavatharam told through ‘kolu’

October 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The “kolu” festival currently in progress at the 1,000-pillar mandapam at Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy temple has been attracting devotees.

Divided into 24 units, the array of idols throws light on the Vaishnative philosophy, Dasavatharam — ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, important episodes such as Gajendra Moksham, using Govarthana hill, the propagation of the sacred Narayana mantram by Sri Ramanuja at Tirukoshtiyur and other important episodes associated with Sri Vishnu.

Specific input

The idols at Dasavatharam give specific information about the importance of each and every incarnation and the objective, making the visitors understand the religious philosophy behind it.

The “kolu” which was designed by Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna, and Sugathan from Mylapore, is open between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Sri Ranganayaki idol is taken to the Thanga mandapam in Thaayar shrine during the festival.

On Vijayadasami day on October 23, Namperumal would be taken around in the temple for worship by devotees.
