With the Corporation Council witnessing the last leg of its session, an extraordinary meeting convened on Monday was more a thanksgiving exercise for most of the councillors, while a few councillors, despite the election code, pleading for additional funds for their wards for executing civic works.
R.Mookan (DMK), Gerald (BJP), S.Ilanjiyam (AIADMK), and O.R.Sriraman (CPI) were among the councillors who expressed their gratitude to officials, Mayor and the Commissioner for their cooperation all through the tenure.
Mr.Mookan specifically thanked them for sanctioning several schemes for his ward.
S.Sujatha, Mayor, who presided over the meeting, said that the extraordinary meeting was convened to obtain the Council's consent for a few changes in the draft list of polling stations, particularly, where booths had been shifted to new buildings from the previous old buildings in a few schools.
K.Kavitha (DMK) said that one of the booths located in her ward was about 3 km from the residential area and pleaded for shifting it to a private school in Devaraya Nagar. J.Senthilnathan (Congress) wanted similar shifting for two booths located in his ward. Danislas, another councillor, wanted shifting of one of the booths from Poonthottam area to a private school. The booth, with voter strength of 400, was about 3 km away from the residential area, he said.
When a couple of DMK councillors including S.Balamurugan and R.Arivudainambi wanted to know whether the election would be held for 60 wards or 65 wards, including the newly added Tiruverambur area, K.Veera Raghava Rao, Commissioner, said that since the matter was sub-judice, no announcement could be made in this regard. Consequently, the code of reservation for the new wards would not be classified now.
