Conservancy work in all 51 wards in Thanjavur Corporation has been entrusted to local women self-help groups.
Earlier, the service was provided on a contract basis by a private company, which engaged 250 workers per day for collecting and clearing the garbage and other wastes generated in the town. The contract was terminated by the civic body for `administrative reasons’ on February 28 and in view of the necessity and importance of heservice, the Corporation has started engaging 250 people per day through women SHGs for 83 days from March 10.
A sum of ₹1.02 crore would be required to engage the conservancy workers at ₹411 per day with EPF and ESI facilities which will work out to ₹66.80 per day. Thus, a resolution seeking the consent of the elected members has been included in the agenda of the Council meeting slated for March 30, sources added.
In addition to this, the civic body has called for bids for Corporation Headquarters Building maintenance work for six months from April 1. In the ₹18 lakh worth tender document released by the civic body it has been stated that the bidder should engage 10 conservancy workers, six watchmen and one technician (electrical and plumbing) for maintenance of the premises comprising ground, first and second floors.
