Conference seeks separate ministry for welfare of minorities

The Social Democratic Party of India has sought a separate ministry in Tamil Nadu for the welfare of minorities. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the party's conference on political awakening of the oppressed held here on Sunday. The party also wanted increase in reservation for Muslims in education and employment.

The conference, which called all democratic and secular forces to join hands to defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre, also demanded implementation of total prohibition in the State.

Retrieval of Wakf properties from encroachments, ensuring safety of women and curbing violence against them and creation of a separate Ministry for Tamils settled abroad were among other resolutions adopted at the conference.

The party's State president Nellai Mubarak presided over the conference in which party's national president M.K. Baiji, TNCC president Su. Thiruvannukkarasar, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Tirumavalavan and others participated.
